Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone shoot HEIC?

HEIC compresses better than JPG at the same quality, so Apple made it the default since iOS 11. The catch: outside the Apple ecosystem many people cannot open them.

Do I lose quality?

Conversion re-encodes to JPG at your chosen quality (90% default, visually identical). For maximum fidelity use HEIC to PNG.

Does it work with Live Photos or bursts?

The main image of each file is converted. The video part of a Live Photo is not part of the standard HEIC.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No: decoding happens entirely in your browser with libheif compiled to WebAssembly.
