What is AVIF?
The image format from the AV1 codec: excellent compression, increasingly used by big websites. Its catch is compatibility with classic software.
Do I lose quality converting?
A minimal recompression; at 90% it's visually identical.
What about transparency?
JPG doesn't support it (filled with white). Use AVIF to PNG if you need it.
Why won't my AVIF open?
You need a current browser (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+); on those the conversion works natively.
